THE PRIVATE WELL-WATER TESTING LAW

GENERAL SAMPLING
Only Certified Laboratories are authorized to conduct the water tests, and only employees of these laboratories or Authorized Representatives of the Certified Laboratories may collect water samples pursuant to the Law. The Law also establishes the location from, and the conditions under which the water testing must be performed.

Systems with NO Water Treatment System
• Samples will be collected from a primary cold water tap, non-aerated spigot or tap that draws from or feeds the system

Systems with Water Treatment Systems
• The water treatment system will be disconnected or disables prior to sample collection.
• The sample will be collected at a location prior to the water treatment system.

New Well Construction and Installation with No Spigot or Tap on Property
• The sample may be collected directly at the wellhead (raw water sample)

LEAD SAMPLING
Two water samples must be collected:
• First draw tap sample: defined as a 1 liter sample collected from a cold tap after the water has stood in the plumbing system for at least 6 hours and is collected without flushing the tap.

• Flushed water sample: defined as a 1 liter sample collected from a cold tap after water has been allowed to flush through the plumbing and tap for at least two minutes.
